Kevin Costner Trades Westerns for Medieval Times in This Folk Tale Adventure Streaming for Free This Month

Kevin Costner is commonly viewed among the greatest Western genre actors ever to grace Hollywood, from the big-screen epic Silverado to the small-screen franchise-starter Yellowstone. However, the same year that he won Best Picture for his acclaimed period piece Dances With Wolves, he traded out his cowboy hat for a bow and arrows and stepped into the folk tale of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves as the titular Robin of Locksley. Though not as beloved a film with a 51% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, it has remained a film of the people, as indicated by the much better 72% audience score and the $390.5 million box office haul it earned. Starting this month, Tubi is now letting users relive the adventure for free.

Prince of Thieves chronicles Robin’s journey to becoming the noble thief who steals from the rich to aid the poor. After landing in prison for his aid of King Richard the Lionheart in the Third Crusade, he escapes along with a newfound comrade, Azeem, and flees back to England. There, he finds his father has been executed as part of a dastardly plot by the Sheriff of Nottingham, played to devious perfection by Alan Rickman in a BAFTA-winning performance, to claim the throne for himself. Upon meeting and joining forces with Little John and Will Scarlet, however, he forms an ever-growing band of outlaws that fight back against the storied villain. In the midst of it all, he falls in love with his late friend Peter’s sister, Lady Marian, who aids in whatever way she can, until the sheriff gets in the way of their romance.

Costner and Rickman were far from the only stars in this Robin Hood adaptation. Fellow Oscar-winner Morgan Freeman took up the role of Azeem, with Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio playing Marian, Christian Slater as Will Scarlet, Nick Brimble as Little John, and Michael McShane as Friar Tuck, among others. In an uncredited turn, James Bond icon Sean Connery also donned the crown as King Richard. The film was directed by Kevin Reynolds, who would go on to helm Costner’s notorious flop, Waterworld.

Costner’s fortunes in the West have seemingly run dry between his high-profile falling out with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and the struggles of his massively expensive passion project Horizon, which still has two more parts planned. He still has one project moving forward apace, though — The Gray House. First shown back at the 2024 Monte-Carlo Film Festival, the Civil War-set series was picked up by Prime Video earlier this year and set to premiere on the platform sometime in early 2026. Although Costner didn’t star or direct, he did get to reunite with his Robin Hood partner-in-crime Freeman to produce the project, which tells the true tale of the unsung women who risked life and limb deep within Confederate territory to transform an underground railroad into an expansive spy network. Roland Joffe helmed the series, with Mary-Louise Parker, Daisy Head, Amethyst Davis, and Ben Vereen leading the cast.

In the meantime, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is now streaming for free on Tubi. Stay tuned here at Collider for more on the biggest films coming to free platforms throughout the year.
