The 1992 romantic thriller “The Bodyguard,” starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, is getting a modern revival, as film distribution company Warner Bros. confirmed that a remake is officially in development.

Deadline confirmed the studio’s plan to give the audience a fresh take on the box-office smash hit, as it revealed that Sam Wrench, known for his work on “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” is set to direct, with a script by Jonathan A. Abrams, known for his work on “Juror No. 2.”

“No casting has been set […] There are many singers who could play the singing star and should be a magnet for an exciting cast,” wrote the outlet.

Sam Wrench, who directed the 2023 concert feature Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, is attached to a new version of the original 1992 drama film that starred Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. No casting announcements have been made.

Jonathan Abrams, who penned last year’s Clint Eastwood-helmed Juror #2 for the studio, is writing the script. Matthew Lopez wrote a previous version of the screenplay for the long-gestating remake that has been in various stages of development since 2011

The Bodyguard centers on a former Secret Service agent (Costner) who is hired to protect a celebrity (Houston) from a stalker. Marking Houston’s feature acting debut, the movie was a big hit and became 1992’s second-highest-grossing title at the worldwide box office. The Bodyguard landed two Oscar nominations and featured Houston’s cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You,” which achieved global success and became a signature, Grammy-winning song for the late pop star.
